The History of Muay Thai

Before Muay Thai was a competitive sport, it was purely a form of self defense. The history of this self defense discipline goes all the way back to the Thailand's earliest history. In a time when the country was repeatedly attacked by other conquering nations, Thailand's people had no choice but to use their own knowledge, skills, and abilities to defend themselves from their enemies.

In those days the Thai people did not have much to work with in the way of weaponry. During battle all they had to use were spears and clubs - items that could only be used at very short range. Because of this, the Thai people were forced to rely on their abilities and instincts to protect their country from invasion by neighboring countries.

Fighting methods developed by the Thais involved using the hands, fists, elbows, feet and head as weapons in close-range fighting. As the fighting methods were systematized, the discipline came to be known as "Muay Thai." In western parts of the world, it is referred to as Thai boxing.

The Beginning of Muay Thai Fighting

In the early days of Muay Thai, fighters used their bare fists to fight. Grappling techniques were rarely or never used. Instead, practitioners would move in close to their opponent to attempt a strike, and then move quickly back out of range to escape being struck by their opponent. Size and weight classes were unheard of in the early days of competitive Muay Thai. Practitioners would spar and often move on to their next bout without so much as a break or time out to rest. If there were rules, there were not many. For example, it was okay to use the head to strike an opponent, and it was also okay to strike the groin area when fighting. The area was not considered off-limits at the time. Eventually as the discipline developed matches were divided up into fighting rounds.

The Elements of Muay Thai

The basic elements of Muay Thai consist of striking techniques using the fists, knees, elbow and feet. Today grappling techniques are sometimes employed as a method of defense during a match. Blocking is an integral part of the martial arts discipline of Muay Thai. Practitioners must be effective blockers to win a match, and in order to block effectively opponents must maintain excellent mental and physical conditioning.

Muay Thai Today

Today Muay Thai is popular all over the world, not just in Thailand. It is becoming a widely recognized competitive sport as more and more people learn self defense through the methods of Muay Thai. Students of Muay Thai can be found everywhere. They are young and old, male and female, and they come from every background and every walk of life. Whether they train using a martial arts DVD or the begin their studies in the classroom they are learning the methods that were employed years ago by the people of Thailand.

The Thaiboxing Workout: A Scientific Approach

Description of Thaiboxing Thai-boxing, the nation's sport of Thailand, is perhaps one of the most brutal sport available. Participants batter the other person with punches, kicks, knees and elbows. There are not many rules in Thai-boxing and boils down to survival of the fittest. A match includes five, three minute rounds. Punching, knee and elbow strikes and kicking techniques may any kind with the body, except the groin. As a result of hard, fast paced action, it is very important for your fighters to become highly conditioned, both mentally and physically. A fighter entering the ring in anything but good shape should expect, at least, to become knocked unconscious. There is also a potential for death or even properly prepared. In Thailand, there are lots of deaths every year because of the beating used the ring.

Most of the Thai-boxers conditioning is performed on the Thai-pads. Thai-pads are solid, heavy pads strapped to the arms of your holder. This process of training is advantageous to the heavy bag in that it allows the fighter to respond to a "live" opponent. The holders job varies, with respect to the desired connection between working out session. For a few drills, the holder attacks with kicks to the legs, body or head, and punches towards the body and head. While defending himself, the fighter throws their own kicks, knees and elbows. Using another method, the holder remains relatively stationary and allows the fighter to fight using a pre-designated combination or a free flow barrage of kicks, knees, and elbows.

Physical Training Proper structure to the work out is a crucial pre-requisite to obtaining desirable results. When making a workout, it is crucial to identify which energy systems are employed in the activity. In line with the systems used, training time could be devoted to improvement of that system. It is also important to identify the original fitness level from the participant, the concentration of the game, frequency, duration, and the approach to training for use.

Energy Systems

According to duration and intensity of the activity, four predominant energy pathways have been identified in Thaiboxing and any sport. The systems identified are the ATP, ATP-CP, Lactic Acid as well as the Aerobic-oxidative system. A simple knowledge of scalping strategies is helpful to understand the appearance of the workouts.

ATP System

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the immediate source of energy for muscular contraction. There are 2 pathways through which it's formed: the aerobic pathway and the anaerobic pathway. The aerobic pathway requires oxygen being present and utilizes fat, protein and carbohydrates (glucose, glycogen) to resynthesize ATP. When movement is very quick and explosive, there isn't sufficient time for oxygen being brought to the contracting muscles. This is how the anaerobic pathway is named into action. The anaerobic pathway does not require oxygen and uses only carbohydrates to make ATP. There's enough ATP kept in muscle to last for only three seconds of contraction.
