Reviewing The Various Types Of Hammers Available
Hammers are regarded as the oldest tools in existence, and they were likely the technology with which other tools were first crafted. The oldest hammer discovered was most likely worked with about 2-1/2 million years ago to make ancient knives or spear heads. Fortunately, in modern times we simply buy our knives and employ the hammers for nails, chisels and occasionally an unfortunate thumb. The three very popular types of hammers are described in the following paragraphs, along with descriptions of specific products. Be sure to check out the Air Wrench.
A claw hammer is employed primarily for driving nails into objects. Sometimes, the claw end is required to pull out nails which have been sloppily hammered in by some other guy. The head attached to the claw hammer is manufactured using fairly brittle steel, so those hammers won’t be intended for metalwork. However, they manage fine against wood, drywall and the other guy’s thumb. Another must see are the Air Grinders.
Stanley sells a properly made 16 oz claw hammer with a fiberglass handle which would look incredibly cool in your tool chest. The high-visibility yellow handle will be easy to locate in the tool chest, and the handle’s fiberglass material and textured rubber make it easy to hold, while the treated steel head makes it hard on nails.
Ball-peen hammers are very different from claw hammers seeing as these hammers have a ball-shaped strike surface and never have a claw-end. This type of hammer is used in metalworking processes for tasks like driving punches and chisels with sufficient force to dent metal. In some circumstances, it might be used to bend sheet metal if the standard machinery is not available. As a result of the way these kinds of hammers are used, they are not so likely to land on thumbs, although knuckles occasionally become collateral damage. Klein Tools, Inc. designs a 12.5 inch ball peen hammer which has a high-carbon steel head. The hardwood hickory handle gives extra heft to the strike and is amply sturdy for years of use.
A sledgehammer is made with a bulky head, flattened on each end and is therefore much heavier than the other two kinds of hammers. Sledgehammers are meant to mete out a bigger thump than other hammers and are not particularly intended for aim. These hammers are often intended for driving spikes and are particularly useful for demolition of quite a few materials. Pony offers a 10-pound sledgehammer mounted on a yard-long fiberglass handle which makes certain that the impact stays with the object, rather than the person working with that hammer. The steel head is hardened for added strength, and the strike surfaces as well as the sides are protected to guard against rust.
Hammers are fairly ancient and especially practical tools. They could be used for fastening, flattening, striking, and occasionally for demolition. No self respecting tool box needs to be seen without at least a couple of these multipurpose tools. By the way, they are absolutely not designed for thumbs, toes or other body parts, so be certain that other guy keeps his hands out of the hammer’s sphere of influence.
