Coats - An Essential Item Of Clothing For Women
Why is it that, when we are small, our parents insist on wrapping us in coats, scarves and gloves that drown our petite frames, whilst themselves sufficing with a nice sweater and casual scarf? Do they not understand that it is we, the kids, who have the higher metabolism and body temp? Clearly not, or at least not in my case, as most of my childhood winter memories consist of the varying colors and textures of coat-based torture my parents would impose, all the while also insisting on cutting of my ability to breath through my nose with the unnecessary addition of the world's itchiest scarf.
I could never understand the need to get me all bundled up, zipped and hooded, only to walk five steps to the car, wherein the heat was sure to be blaring, only to arrive at our destination to go through the same process, only in reverse. By the time it was removed, I would inevitably be both sweating and feeling as though I had been deprived of oxygen. Maybe I was hot-blooded, or maybe it was the down-filled, industrial strength coats that my mother chose, but for many years after I was old enough to make my own wardrobe choices, I would opt for layering several garments in preference to anything that resembled a coat.
So how weird it seems to me and to my mom and sis that aside from shoes, the article of which I own the most permutations and the wardrobe piece that holds the dearest position in my closet is my collection of coats. I have every type of fabric for every season of the year, and enough color variations to empty a box of 72 Crayons. Short, long or mid-length, I chose them each with care and attention and with a specific purpose in mind.
I first came to understand the stylistically transformative abilities of coats when I was stranded in London in unseasonably cold weather without even so much as a sweater. Deciding to view the acquisition as a congratulatory purchase based on my newly won job, I went into a prestigious store and decided to throw both my preconceived notions and my bank balance to the wind. Based on the recommendation of a sales associate there, I tried on something I would not have ordinarily chosen, but the resultant effect on both my appearance and attitude were a revelation. The coat was easy, but elegant; tailored yet comfortable.
Since that day nearly thirteen years ago, I have left behind all of my prior resentment for the necessities winter brings. Indeed I find myself cheering it on, wishing that it would get here more quickly and stay for much longer. Regardless of the simplicity of the outfit underneath, I know instinctively that I can change my appearance simply by the decision I make with regards to which coat to wear on top of it all. The short Vanessa Bruno or the uber fitted Vivienne Westwood. Each has its own personality and each tells a different story as to whom it is I prefer to be on any given day.
